In My Mailbox (December 5th-11th 2010)

My final exam is now over! Which means slightly less stress and slightly more reading time I hope, although I do still have my massive final paper due on Tuesday. However I had a wonderful week mailbox wise and I do hope I get to dig into these lovelies soon.

{For Review}
The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli (TLC Tours)
The Blindness of the Heart by Julia Franck (Grove/Atlantic Inc.)
Vida by Patricia Engel (Grove/Atlantic Inc.)
Hell by Robert Olen Butler (Grove/Atlantic Inc.)
Vacation by Deb Olin Unferth (Grove/Atlantic Inc.)
Twelve by Nick McDonell (Grove/Atlantic Inc.)
20 Under 40 edited by Deborah Treisman (D&M)

Ironically, I had just purchased two of the books I received for review (Specifically Twelve and Vacation) so I think that teaches me to stop rushing out to buy books I'm lusting over right away. I am really really looking forward to all the books I received this week though, it's hard to pinpoint one in particular, I'm sure they will be amazing.

{Bought}
The Small Box of Short Stories by Dave Eggers, Sarah Manguso and Deb Olin Unferth
Vacation by Deb Olin Unferth

So Vacation was a whoops- definitely should have saved my money, but the book was released awhile ago and I doubted my request for a review copy would be fulfilled. It turns out it was, so I will probably have a copy to host a giveaway with next year. The Small Box of Short Stories is an absolutely gorgeous collection, honestly I don't even care if the stories are good I'm glad I bought it cause it's so beautiful to have on the shelf. I wish all books came this way.

How was your mailbox treating you this week?

  13. I received for review The Job by Craig Davis from the author.

    Joe B. enjoys the sweet life as a vice president at a huge conglomerate, Universal Whirligig. But along with the Big Boss' favor, he has also gained the notice of a bitter human resources manager, Luci Fernandez. Hateful of any success but her own, Luci manages to get him demoted to the mail room! A rollicking comedy of errors follows as Joe B. tries to figure out what's happened to him, and attempts to get a meeting with the Big Boss. Joe B.'s great expectations have taken a dickens of a twist. His family is forced to make a series of hard adjustments, and he gets only lame comforts from a string of the worst friends anyone could have. Will he finally track down the cause of his frustrations? Or will he only learn a lesson about what it is to be the boss, and that what is apparent is often only a shadow of a greater ongoing good? "The Job: Based on a True Story (I Mean, This is Bound to Have Happened Somewhere) is a modern parable of ancient troubles and truths.
