Book Blogger Hop and Follow Friday

So it's been almost two months since the last time I participated in these two memes but I figured it's about time I joined back in.

The blog hop is hosted by Jen from Crazy for Books.

This weeks question is: What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?
Well, I'm not a fan of paranormal books which means that I tend to avoid most of the books getting a lot of hype these days. However before I posted my slightly negative review of Great House by Nicole Krauss I had only read good things about it. The book had even been nominated for a National Book Award! But it just wasn't for me and I felt perfectly comfortable posting my review because it was honest and I'm sure there are other people who agree. Mostly though, I tend to avoid books until the hype has died down a bit, unless it's by an author I already know I enjoy, that way I can appreciate a book like The Hunger Games on my own terms.

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee

This week's question: What do you do besides reading / reviewing as a hobby?

Reading and reviewing is definitely my major hobby these days, but occasionally I also enjoy writing both creatively and to friends as I love mail. I also recently taught myself how to knit again and I am halfway through a massive purple scarf, I love that I can knit and study at the same time, which isn't exactly true of blogging or reading!

While you're visiting my blog don't forget to enter my two awesome giveaways. The first one is for Outside the Ordinary World by Dori Ostermiller, and the second (brand new) one is for Heidegger's Glasses by Thaisa Frank. Happy Friday everyone and welcome to In The Next Room.

  1. Hopping through. New follower!
A lot of the big award winning/nominee books aren't for me. The only one I really loved of recent award winners was Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

  2. I the like paranormal stuff, but a lot of the books that have been published lately could really use another couple rounds of editing >.> Makes me sad.

I was lucky to have gotten into The Hunger Games without any knowledge of the hype whatsoever... course the friend that recommended it to me failed to mention that it was part of a trilogy BEFORE I started reading it heh~~

Stopping by from Follow Friday and am your newest follower~~

  4. Hey Zoe! Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I'd love to be able to write well, like reviews and even essays. I do enjoy getting real paper mail as well, but I mostly forget to send letters hehe.

I cant knit to save my life! But I do enjoy Crocheting.

Have a fabulous day and weekend!

  5. Hey there! I am hopping along on the blog hop.
    Thanks for visiting my blog.
I remember my mum's first piece of knitting, a red lap rug, I left home before she finished it! Took her 10 years before it was done lol

  6. Great House was going to be one of my choices for this week, but I chose a different book. I didn't see what was so appealing....it was disconnected and made no sense to me.

I thought it was going to be a great read. I am glad someone else felt the same as I did about the book.

Stop by my blog to see the book I chose for this week's answer.

    First-time visitor...cute blog.

  7. No paranormal? Gasp! It seems like that's all anyone's reading these days. I think you're smart, though, to wait until the hype dies down so you can read books on your own terms.

Glad to have found you via the Hop!

  8. Just hopping by to say Hi! It's funny you chose Great House - I just saw a glowing review of it yesterday. I see one of the commenters above mentioned loving Wolf Hall, but I couldn't finish it. I'm off to enter your Heidegger's Glass giveaway! I've got a big giveaway of my own going on, please stop by if you get a chance! Let Them Read Books

  9. To your first question- I absolutly HATED The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It was getting rave reviews and Oprah said it would change my life. And it did because up until that point I have never hated a book as much as I do that one. And I wrote a terrible review on it, AND I wrote the author a letter saying that I think the fact he spent like 8 years or whatever writing it is something he shouldn't promote because it was really that bad. What a shitty ending for the book and I was angry after finishing it. LOL. That was over a year ago and I'm STILL angry about it. LOL!! :)

  18. I waited a long time to read Hunger Games and didn't enjoy it, that is part of my answer actually.

I only choose hyped books that intrigue me but there have been a few that is just not my cup of tea.

Maybe I need to choose better, that is a goal for next year.

    My response to my question.

  31. I'm not a fun of paranormal books either and most vampire books as well so many of the books being hyped on some blogs I don't read.

I havenot read Nicole Krauss' The History of Love yet but have read many great reviews of it. Her more recent book Great House sounds pretty unique. I've read a few reviews and they seem to run the spectrum from great to don't bother. I'm interested but want to read History of Love first!
