In My Mailbox (October 30th-November 19th 2011)

Photobucket
Well I'm really behind on this meme! I spent the last two weekends away and have some catching up to do, but luckily it's not too long because this hasn't really been a book-heavy month.

October 30th- November 5th
{For Review}
Camp Nine by Vivienne Schiffer (TLC Tours)
First Day on Earth by Cecil Castellucci (Unsolicited) (Scholastic Canada)
iBoy by Kevin Brooks (Unsolicited) (Scholastic Canada)
Cow: A Bovine Biography by Florian Werner (D&M Publishers)

The first book looks incredibly powerful and I am hoping to read it soon. The middle two books are outside of what I would normally read, but may be interesting. The final one is so unique and interesting and I can't wait to find out what kind of impact the cow has had historically- kinda the perfect book to read while living in cattle country!

{Gifts}
Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
Birthmarked by Caragh M. O'Brien

Thanks so much to Ambur for the awesome amazing birthday books! I'm so excited to finally own my own lovely hardcover copy of Birthmarked and the LHA is one I've been wanting to read for awhile and now have the perfect excuse.

November 6th-12th
{For Review}
The Doll by Daphne du Maurier (TLC Book Tours)

Never read anything by this author before, but I know she's a classic, so I'm intrigued to try this lesser known book by her.

November 13th-19th
{For Review}
Matched by Ally Condie (Penguin Canada)
Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver (ARC) (Harper Collins Canada)

I ended up with two copies of Crossed by none of its prequel, so I was really glad when Matched arrived this week and will be curious to try out the series. I've already read and absolutely adored Liesl & Po so there will be a review soon- even the ARC is gorgeous but I'm definitely purchasing myself a finished copy!

Wonderful batch of books this week. I'm insanely excited to read The Tiger's Wife which for some reason I still haven't managed to so I definitely plant to get to that soon. Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking broke my heart when I read it (review here) and Blue Nights deals with the death of her daughter so I imagine it'll be just as tragic and I'll have to make sure I'm not already feeling down when I read it. As somebody doing their masters with plants of course I am excited about a plant book- Untamed Garden. World War II fascinates me and I especially love a story about inspiring women so I was really excited about A Train In Winter, so excited I apparently got it from two sources! The Chronicles of Harris Burdick looks absolutely gorgeous, as does the Fred Herzog photography book and overall I just can't wait to dig into these gems.

{For Review}
Chronicles of Harris Burdick: Fourteen Amazing Authors Tell the Tales by Chris Van Allsburg (Thomas Allen)
Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick by Joe Schreiber (Thomas Allen)
A Train in Winter by Caroline Moorehead (ARC) (TLC Book Tours)

Awesome batch of books this week. I was incredibly excited about the ones in the top row, there are only very limited copies of the Murakami going out and the kind people at Random House let me have one as a birthday present! Plus, I thought I had missed out on Waking Storms but the publicist found another copy she had tucked away. I've actually already read Frost and Practical Jean already- I guess I couldn't wait to get started on these goodies.

{For Review}
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami (Random House Canada)
Frost by Wendy Delsol (Candlewick)
Waking Storms by Sarah Porter (Thomas Allen)

In My Mailbox (September 25th-October 1st 2011)

Very busy mailbox this week, although it came in basically two big chunks, one from Thomas Allen and one from Penguin Canada. Excited for all these books and I can't wait to read and review them. There's a few too many for me to talk about individually but there are many I am really looking forward to. Plus, one I had really been looking forward to finally arrived from Abebooks.com where I purchased it after being unable to find it anywhere! Hopefully I have more time this upcoming week as while I am writing this I still haven't finished a single book this week!

In My Mailbox (September 18th-24th)

I got a nice batch of books for review. Funnily, a sequel (Crossed) arrived before the first book in the series. I got two adult non-fiction, one about tree planting and another about art theft, both of which sound really interesting. Overall, a good week. I'm happy to not be getting overwhelming numbers of books recently as my own reading has slowed down with a very busy September. That said, a few books I am really looking forward to haven't arrived yet, so fingers crossed a couple (*cough* Waking Storms *cough*) show up this upcoming week.

{For Review}
The Jewel and the Key by Lousie Spiegler (Thomas Allen & Sons)

In My Mailbox (September 11th-17th 2011)

In addition to a few exciting review copies that arrived this week, my Big Box of YA showed up at home in Montreal. My mom isn't particularly happy about storing it for the next 8 months til I graduate, but with the amazing deals going on I couldn't help it. I spent only $42.96 on all those books! It's a mix of new authors and ones I've enjoyed and want to try more of (Forman, Scott, Freitas, Levithan, Bray and MacCullough- the rest are new to me although I have heard rave things about many of their books.)

In My Mailbox (September 4th-10th 2011)

A small but good week for my mailbox. The first book has just been long-listed for the Giller Prize (very prestigious Canadian literary prize) and arrived the same day the list was announced. The second was a surprise but very welcome copy of a dystopia where chocolate and coffee are illegal. The third one is for an upcoming book tour, it's a historical fiction novel and apparently has already been sold to be made into a film by director Michael Mann; it sounds very intriguing and combines many things I find interesting and hold hear to my heart including WWII, photography and Judaism.

{For Review}
The Return by Dany Laferriere (D&M Publishers)
All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin (Unsolicited) (D&M Publishers)
Waiting for Robert Capa by Susana Fortes (ARC) (TLC Tours)

This was a good week in that the books I read far outnumbered the books I gained... if you don't consider the books I bought. But those twenty haven't arrived yet so I'll save their mention for next week!

In My Mailbox (August 28th- September 3rd 2011)

Overall it was a good week for my mailbox, although the highlight was not what was added to my collection but instead what I gave away. I had the opportunity to meet up with fellow blogger Ambur when she visited my city and we went for supper last night. I'm moving in the coming year and won't be able to take all my books with me and so she took a stack of at least fifty off my hands, including some for guest reviews you'll likely to be seeing on my blog in the future. Thanks so much Ambur and it was great meeting you!

I figured it was okay to accept a few of Ambur's books since I got rid of so many... and I just couldn't resist these three all of which I am incredibly looking forward to. Thanks so much Ambur!

{Bought}

I actually ordered these a few weeks ago from BookCloseOuts.ca but I had them shipped to Montreal because a) it was cheaper b) I'm not optimistic enough to believe I'll actually read them anytime soon. That said, I am looking forward to all of them!

In My Mailbox (August 21st-27th 2011)

This week my mailbox was a little less crazy but just as wonderful. I've been looking forward to some of these (Exposed, for one) for months and it's a great collection: everything from a fairy tale retelling to a novel in verse to a non-fiction table book to poetry to post-apocalyptic fiction. Can't wait to dig into them all.

In My Mailbox (July 31st-August 6th 2011)

This week a big batch of books from Random House that I'd been excitedly waiting for finally arrived and I can't wait to dig into them all; it includes a great batch of Canadian authors and a memoir I'm very excited for (Don't Kill the Birthday Girl) about life with allergies. I also spurged on a batch of books I purchased but they won't show up in my mailbox posts as I sent them to my family home as I doubt I would have had a chance to read them before I move. I also got a couple really great sounding YA, I'm especially excited about Dark Parties. I read a rave review of Rules of Civility, which takes place in 1938 New York, and I'm very excited to give it a try myself.
East of the West by Miroslav Penkov (Random House Canada)
Don't Kill The Birthday Girl by Sandra Beasley (Random House Canada)
The Tao of Travel by Paul Theroux (Random House Canada)
Vital Signs by Tessa McWatt (Random House Canada)
Fauna by Alissa York (Random House Canada)
The Beauty of Humanity Movement by Camilla Gibb (Random House Canada)
The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles (Penguin Canada)
Dark Parties by Sara Grant (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
Guardians of the Dead by Karen Healey (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)

Are you looking forward to reading any of these titles? What was in your mailbox this week?

Saturday, July 30, 2011

In My Mailbox (July 24th-30th 2011)

It was a good week for my mailbox, a few surprises and my boyfriend was able to pick up a couple that had been waiting for me before I went on vacation that I look forward to delving into.

{For Review}
Spycatcher by Matthew Dunn (Unsolicited) (William Morrow)
The Accident by Linwood Barclay (Unsolicited) (Random House Canada)
Ripple by Mandy Hubbard (Penguin Canada)
Falling for Hamlet by Michelle Ray (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
Now is the Time for Running by Michael Williams (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)

I admit the title I'm most excited about is Ripple, I haven't gotten in on the mermaid trend yet but between receiving both Ripple and The Lost Voices recently it looks like I'll be experiencing the dark side of sirens soon. I'm also looking forward to Falling for Hamlet but I think I'll hold off and read the play first, I'm sure it's not necessary but I tend to prefer it when it comes to books inspired by classic literature.

What was in your mailbox this week? Anything in particular you're looking forward to jumping into?

Monday, July 25, 2011

How has your mailbox been treating you lately?

Sunday, July 03, 2011

In My Mailbox (June 19th-July 2nd 2011)

So after a few weeks of sporadic mail and Canada Post not delivering, we finally got our mail back this Tuesday! Unfortunately it was a short week, with Canada Day meaning no mail on Friday, but I did get a few books I'd been looking forward to.

{For Review}
The Secret Lives of the Four Wives by Lola Shoneyin (TLC Tours)
Holy Ghost Girl by Donna Johnson (ARC) (TLC Tours)
What Language Is by John McWhorter (TLC Tours)

Three books for upcoming book tours, including a novel, a memoir and a non-fiction. They all sound interesting I am looking forward to reading and reviewing them soon.

{Bought}
Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

I really enjoy novels in verse, after first discovering the amazing Ellen Hopkins last year, and Schroeder has been mentioned quite a few times as another author who writes YA in verse to watch. When I purchased this I had an egalley of Schroeder's latest book, The Day Before, which I have since read and enjoyed (review coming) although it wasn't my favourite, but Chasing Brooklyn has a supernatural tint and has had rave reviews so I am definitely looking forward to it.

In My Mailbox (June 5th-11th 2011)

So it was a good week for my mailbox though a bad week for reading. School has been very intense lately and now that I'm into the second half of my masters it's taken up the majority of my time. I'm trying to get everything organized since I am taking two weeks off in July. Hopefully I can fit a little more reading into my schedule though, I'm behind even on books for book tours (which never happens!).
My Life Undecided by Jessica Brody (Unsolicated) (D&M Publishers Inc.)
You Must Go and Win by Alina Simone (D&M Publishers Inc.)
The Optimism Bias by Tall Sharot (Random House Canada)
Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (Random House Canada)
Blood Red Road by Moira Young (Random House Canada)
The Thirteen by Susie Moloney (Random House Canada)
Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares (Random House Canada)

I am looking forward to all of these books, especially Blood Red Road because I love my YA dystopia, The Thirteen and Miss Peregrine's both sound awesomely creepy, and Sisterhood Everlasting is the fifth book in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and takes place ten years later. I loved the series when I was a kid but I don't know if I ever read the fourth book, either way I plan to reread them all before picking this up. They are definitely perfect summer reads.

What was in your mailbox this week?
And as an sidenote, how do you balance school and reading/blogging? I haven't had trouble before but life has gotten so hectic lately!

Sunday, June 05, 2011

In My Mailbox (May 29th-June 4th 2011)

I know I haven't been blogging much lately, I guess I have just gotten a little worn out and have also been very busy with school. I am still reading, albeit at a slower rate, and I do hope you'll stick with me until I get back into my grove. I promise there will still be at least one review a week, I do have book tour obligations, but on top of that I'm not sure exactly how much I'll be posting. I do have many lovely books waiting for me when I'm ready.

{For Review}
With or Without You by Brian Farrey (Teen Book Scene Tour)
Pretend You Love Me by Julie Anne Peters (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
The DUFF by Kody Keplinger (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma (ARC) (Penguin Canada)
She Loves You, She Loves You Not by Julie Anne Peters (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
Forgotten by Cat Patrick (Little Brown, Books for Younger Readers)
Trader of Secrets by Steve Martini (Unsolicated) (Harper Collins)
Once Every Never by Lesley Livingston (ARC) (Penguin Canada)

and as a closer peek, Brian Farrey was kind enough to sign his book as well as include an exclusive bookmark which was printed before the title of his novel was changed:
I just finished With or Without You yesterday and it was incredible, there will be a review up tomorrow.

{Gift}
The very talented Jennifer Brown who wrote Hate List as well as the recent release, The Bitter End, had the opportunity to get a signed bookmark on her blog so of course I had to e-mail! She also included a name plate (personally addressed!) and a bracelet with the words "make a difference" on it. As somebody who lives in a place where there are no book signings this was such an amazing joy to receive. I'm so excited to start reading The Bitter End soon.

{Won}
Although I don't own the book (yet) I was lucky enough to win an autographed bookmark and bag for Chasing Alliecat by Rebecca Fjelland Davis, thanks to Lauren at 365 Day of Reading.

In My Mailbox (May 15th-28th 2011)

I was away last weekend and didn't get a chance to post my mailbox so you get two weeks worth today! Actually though, the last two weeks have been pretty calm which is definitely a good thing as I have a billion books (only a slight exaggeration) to read as it is. Definitely looking forward to all of these ones though.

May 15th-21st
{For Review}
Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari (Scholastic Canada)
Alone in the Classroom by Elizabeth Hay (Random House Canada)
The London Train by Tessa Hadley (ARC) (TLC Tours)

Really excited for all of these, Ashes is a YA dystopia that's supposed to be fantastic, while Alone in the Classroom is new Canadian Fiction. The London Train is for an upcoming book tour, and although it is an ARC isn't that cover gorgeous?

{Bought}
Divergent by Veronica Roth

I read the first 100 pages of Divergent online and got SO hooked, combine that with the fact that I've only seen rave reviews and I knew it was time to order my copy. Then I had to wait for it to arrive anxiously. Totally worth the wait though, this is easily one of my new favourite books. I'll be reviewing it soon.

May 22nd-28th
{For Review}
Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky (Thomas Allen & Sons)

I am SO excited for Awaken, I just love my YA dystopia and this one- a love story set in a world where everyone communicates via computers instead of in person- definitely has a creepy and believable premise.

{Bought}
The Sack of Bath by Adam Fergusson

To be honest, I didn't really know what The Sack of Bath was about when I pre-ordered it several months ago. I just knew it was by a publisher, Persephone, that I'd been hearing really great things about and it was available for $1 (I think that was a mistake as other ones are around $19) so I hit buy. It actually has a lot of black and white photos instead to accompany the text... still not completely sure what it is about but I will definitely be finding out more in the future.

What was in your mailbox this week? Or in your suitcase, if you went to BEA in which case I am insanely jealous! I'm hoping I can maybe make it in 2013...
